Reuse Recycling Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Household hazardous waste (HHW) are common everyday leftover household product(s) that have any of these four potentially hazardous characteristics; flammable, corrosive, toxic, or reactive. Below you will find the list of the most common household products that typically contain hazardous components and therefore they require special care when being disposed of.

Collection Events are free and open to residential customers of the utility partners. To drop off items, a resident/customer must register for an appointment, and present a driver’s license or utility bill with an address in the jurisdictional boundaries of one of the following partners: the City of Lakeway, City of Bee Cave, The Hills, Hurst Creek Municipal Utility District, Lakeway MUD, or Travis County Water Control and Improvement District No. 17 (WCID No.17).  There is a 30 GALLON LIMIT  per person for disposal at each event. For any residents living outside of this utility partnership, there is a fee of $40.

Tips for properly handling HHW:

• Please be considerate
• Sort your items first, please do not bring boxes of trash to the center
• Throw out empty containers in your residential trash pickup
• Latex paint can(s) with a small amount of left-over paint should be opened and left to dry out so you can throw them away in your residential trash pickup (more detail below)
• Items not in their original container will not be accepted
  
• Transport items in boxes to prevent spills in your vehicle keeping items visible. Do not overstack
• Try to keep hazardous products in their original containers and never remove labels
• Never mix products. Incompatible products might react, ignite, or explode
• Follow any instructions for use and disposal provided on the product labels

THIS CENTER WILL ACCEPT – COMMON HOUSEHOLD PRODUCTS LIST

• Household products — cleaning products, drain cleaners, oven cleaning solvents, degreasers, polishers, pool chemicals, batteries, mercury thermometers, gas grill propane tanks (no other size);
• Paint products — aerosol cans, latex and oil-based paints, preservatives, strippers;
• Automotive products — antifreeze, vehicle batteries, oil and oil filters,  brake and transmission fluid;
• Yard Products – Herbicides and Pesticides, pet products;
• Accepted materials must be labeled and in their original containers for transport.

THIS CENTER CANNOT ACCEPT:

• Asbestos products — including but not limited to linoleum tiles containing asbestos from older homes;
• Industrial waste — anything from a business;
• Medical waste — needles, syringes, prescription drugs, etc.;
• Explosive materials – ammunition, fireworks, dynamite, flares;
• Tires;
• Appliances — small or large; or,
• Electronics – computers, printers, televisions, speakers, surround sound.
